I need a new sweeper. Um...because that's what I call a vacuum. Uh huh. The hillbillies that raised me called the vacuum a sweeper and so that's what I called it until I married King George who always pretended he didn't know what I was talking about when I used the term sweeper. So, now, reluctantly, I too call it a vacuum but in my heart it's a sweeper.
I need one.
Desperately.
I cannot afford one.
Desperately.
So, I have been doing a little research. Some of you out there have mentioned wanting to be buried with your Dyson (I won't name names) but this morning on the news they had one that use some sort of light to KILL THE DUST MITES that Oprah has so diligently warned us about all these years. It's the Halo UVX. Its UVC rays kill dust mites. Costs $399. ALMOST 400 bucks!!! But it does kill those dust mites....hmmm...
I'm used to something a little cheaper. Something like this:
So tell me ladies, what sweeper vacuum are you using and why. Thanks.
Well, I don't have a Dyson, that's for damn sure, because $300+ can be better spent on groceries or shoes for the kids or shoes for me. I have a vac that came from Lowes and it's reddish. It has one of those awesome canisters that collects the schmutz instead o a bag.

Okay, I checked. It's a Bissell.

My grandparents always called it a sweeper too. I think it is endearing.

ok i feel like a stalker, but your blog is great...i too need a new vacuum...ours is a 20 year old electrolux with duct tape repairs...I did read this artical though that makes me feel so much better about my housekeeping INabilities...that dust helps young children resist some allergies--so really, i'm doing them a favor!...so maybe i can invest in a lower priced sweeper/vacuum or hoover as a brit friend of mine calls it.

I have a red Dyson...the feminine equivalent of the red sportscar for a man's midlife crisis. After years of dealing with broken down vacuums (not to mention miles of duct tape and other patching materials) I decided I deserved a Dyson. Having six kids, three dogs and various members of assorted entourages, I must say I don't know how I managed without it for so long. And it looks so nice, too. Which is important since it is often just sitting in the family or living rooms, waiting to be used.
And yes, we have managed to clog it. But we are exceptional. (exceptionally dirty)
The Halo sounded appealing but it looked cumbersome and less than stellar to use.

I'm using a 20+ year old Electralux. Every time I've gone looking for a replacement, I can't find one that has better suction than mine. So I stick with the old dirty, duct tape repaired beast.

i have a dyson. it is wonderful...on carpet. my husband would kill me for saying this, b/c he is one of those psychos who want to be buried with their dysons but it has to be said...the dyson is not the best on hard floors. it tends to blow air out of the bottom, so unless you vacuum directly over the dirt on the floor, it just gets blown into the corner where even God cant find it. however, if your entire house is carpeted then it is well worth the money. it even manages to pick up the hair from my two hairy children, i mean dogs. good luck!!

Hi there...I actually work at Halo and I'm delighted you're considering it. Our vacuum certainly does kill dust mites and works wonders in the suction department. I don't paid a penny for promoting Halo...I do the website and write the blog. Ha. But I have a retriever/chow mix at home and my halo is working out GREAT. If anyone DOES have any questions about Halo, please feel free to drop me a line at [email protected] or check out our website at gethalo.com! Thanks!!

The cheaper, the better. Vacuums are disposable around my house. And the expensive ones never live up to their hype.

In the beautiful seasons of spring and autumn riding a bicycle to travel and appreciate the natural views is a wonderful experience.
