This morning on the radio I heard a commercial for the new Disney movie, "Enchanted". The last line of the commercial said, "some material may not be suitable for children". Really? A fairytale, not suitable for children...is fairytale a misnomer then, I don't think it counts as a fairytale if little kids can't watch it.
And have you heard all the interesting information about the writer of "The Golden Compass"? It seems it was written by a proud atheist and has anti-religious themes within it. I remember hearing hysterical comments like this about Harry Potter which turned out to be not true. However, on The Golden Compass the website Snopes confirms the gossip, you can read more here. Yikes.
Look, I know that my girls are going to be subjected to things out in the world that are counter to what I am teaching them, but at such a young age? It seems so sinister.
I prefer that they are exposed to these things while I am with them so that we can discuss where we disagree with the topic or the issue and I can give them our family line on the controversy.
However, I am hesitant to put money in the pockets of people who are part of the barrage of...crap.
Actually, we bought the book The Golden Compass about a year ago. Princess CoCo and I read voraciously and were in need of a new series. A clerk at Barnes & Noble suggested it and said something like, "I think everyone should read this series". So, we took it home and started it on that very evening. It was the first time this ever happened to us....we couldn't get into it. So, we read a different book and came back to it a couple of weeks later. Once again, we could not get into it. It was weird.
When I saw the movie being previewed recently I thought maybe that would get us going on the book again. But then I started hearing all of the noise on the Internet about it. Did I already say Yikes?
Who knew this mothering thing would be filled with so much surprising complexity?
My girls are smart and skeptical (thanks to a generally sarcastic mother). It is my hope that they don't just buy ideas hook, line and sinker. While we are religious people I still think it's God pleasing to develop your analytical brain. But it all comes back to the funding of the other side. I refuse to line their pockets with my hard earned dollars.
