This morning on the radio I heard a commercial for the new Disney movie, "Enchanted". The last line of the commercial said, "some material may not be suitable for children". Really? A fairytale, not suitable for children...is fairytale a misnomer then, I don't think it counts as a fairytale if little kids can't watch it.
And have you heard all the interesting information about the writer of "The Golden Compass"? It seems it was written by a proud atheist and has anti-religious themes within it. I remember hearing hysterical comments like this about Harry Potter which turned out to be not true. However, on The Golden Compass the website Snopes confirms the gossip, you can read more here. Yikes.
Look, I know that my girls are going to be subjected to things out in the world that are counter to what I am teaching them, but at such a young age? It seems so sinister.
I prefer that they are exposed to these things while I am with them so that we can discuss where we disagree with the topic or the issue and I can give them our family line on the controversy.
However, I am hesitant to put money in the pockets of people who are part of the barrage of...crap.
Actually, we bought the book The Golden Compass about a year ago. Princess CoCo and I read voraciously and were in need of a new series. A clerk at Barnes & Noble suggested it and said something like, "I think everyone should read this series". So, we took it home and started it on that very evening. It was the first time this ever happened to us....we couldn't get into it. So, we read a different book and came back to it a couple of weeks later. Once again, we could not get into it. It was weird.
When I saw the movie being previewed recently I thought maybe that would get us going on the book again. But then I started hearing all of the noise on the Internet about it. Did I already say Yikes?
Who knew this mothering thing would be filled with so much surprising complexity?
My girls are smart and skeptical (thanks to a generally sarcastic mother). It is my hope that they don't just buy ideas hook, line and sinker. While we are religious people I still think it's God pleasing to develop your analytical brain. But it all comes back to the funding of the other side. I refuse to line their pockets with my hard earned dollars.
I couldn't agree more. It scares the S*&# out of me that there are people out there that will exploit children to further their sinister agenda. What makes it so sinister is that they are so secretive about it. Yiks is right!

I'm right there with you. There are so many times, not just in the entertainment industry, that I feel we are in the minority with our beliefs. It scares the living heck out of me. No wonder why we are overprotective mothers.

I couldn't agree more!! I feel the same way! As parents we need to be extra cautious!! I know or I feel I am the minority in my thinking very often.

Great posting. The link to Snopes was particularly effective.

I have been lurking for awhile, but this is my first comment...I have been reading up on 'The Golden Compass' for awhile trying to figure it out myself when I read a post from the student ministry leader at my church regarding this movie. There is an interview with the author where he states that he really doesn't care either way what people think, and that he isn't promoting atheism. Here is the link if anyone is interested.

I'm with you. Brain power is great and we do watch and read things that have material that would make Dr Dobson very upset but I will not give them my $$$$.
